Born on October 18, 1937 in Halle/Westfalen.

1957 Abitur in Bielefeld

1957– 1963 Studied chemistry at Johannes Gutenberg University (Dipl.-Chem.)

1965 Awarded doctorate as Dr. rer. nat. under W. Kern, University of Mainz

1966 – 1968 Harkness scholarship of the Commonwealth Fund of New York and Research Associate at Stanford University, Stanford, Cal., USA, under P.J. Flory

1968 – 1973 Assistant at Mainz University

1972 Habilitation for organic chemistry at the University of Mainz

1975 – 1982 Co-editor of the journal Die Makromolekulare Chemie/Macromolecular Chemistry and Physics and, up to 1999, editor of this and related journals (Macromolecular Rapid Communications, Macromolecular Symposia, Macromolecular Theory and Simulations) and up to 2001, member of the Executive Editorial Board

1973 – 1978 Professor (C 2) at the Institute of Organic Chemistry, University of Mainz
