Univ. Prof. Dr.-Ing. Johannes Wortberg holds the Chair for Design Theory and Plastics Machinery at the University of Duisburg-Essen. After spending several years as a member of the scientific staff and head of department at the Institute of Plastics Processing (IKV) at RWTH Aachen University, he became head of Research and Development at Battenfeld Extrusionstechnik in Bad Oeynhausen and Bochum in 1983. From 1987 to 1992 he was Professor of Plastics Engineering at the University of Paderborn, and from 1993 to 2000 was Professor of Engineering Design and Plastics Machinery at the University of Essen. Since 2001 he has been head of the Institute for Product Engineering (IPE) at the University of Duisburg-Essen.

The focus of his research work has been on plastics machinery and process engineering, including quality management in plastics processing. He has been particularly involved with drive systems for plastics machinery in injection moulding and blow moulding, plasticising, mould and cooling technology in extrusion, granule drying, and process and product quality.
