After the success of the last edition, this congress is consolidated as the leading business platform to boost the global bioplastics industry.

The debate on the future of bioplastics starts today in Berlin (Germany) and ADBioplastics will not miss the appointment. This is the 14th edition of the European Bioplastics Conference, organized by European Bioplastics Association, which will take place on December 3 and 4 at the Titanic Chaussee Hotel in the German capital. As exhibitors of the leading business platform to boost the global bioplastics industry, ADBioplastics will share space with BASF, the leading multinational in the chemical industry, NatureWorks, North American manufacturer of PLA, Novamont or the ITENE Technology Center, among others. At the head of the startup stand will be the entire technical department, José Ángel Ramos, CTO, and Iván Navarro, Project Manager, both PhDs in materials and polymers, as well as the CEO of the startup, José Manuel Suárez.

With all the EU regulations for 2030, the intense debate about the future of traditional plastics has opened up many opportunities for bioplastics. That is precisely where the biobased and compostable PLA-Premium product is framed, which manufactures custom ADBioplastics, to promote the circular economy. This startup focuses on three sectors: food, cosmetics, and pharmaceuticals by extrusion-thermoforming, injection, and injection blowing techniques.

Speakers in the European Bioplastics

During these two days, this Congress will host keynote speakers. Werner Bosmans, DG Environment of the European Commission, will talk about European politics and bioplastics in the circular economy; Clément Affholder, Innovation Manager of VAUDE, will address bioplastics from the perspective of a brand owner and Carmen Arndt, Project Coordinator at IfBB, who will focus on the challenges of bioplastics in marine biodegradability. This event will serve to address the main challenges facing the planet: manufacturers, brands, policymakers, institutions, and NGOs.

In the last edition, the 13th European Bioplastics Conference, there was an attendance record with a total of 420 participants from 255 companies and 45 different countries. ADBioplastics takes stock of its passage through the K 2019 trade fair, which took place from October 16 to 23, interviewing Iván Navarro, Ph.D. in materials and Project Manager of this startup. Considered the number one of the plastics and rubber industry, K 2019 has hosted 225,000 visitors from 168 countries and 3,300 exhibitors for 8 days. Without a doubt, it has exceeded all the expectations.

Q. How would you summarize this K 2019 fair edition?
A. If I had to make a headline it would be "desperate search for biodegradable alternatives". Besides, there was much confusion with the biodegradable and compostable terms among the plastic transformers themselves. More information and education is needed before the European regulations of 2030.

Q. What kind of information?
A. In the sense, many visitors told us that they had bought bio-polyethylene because it was biobased, but they were surprised when it did not biodegrade later. If the plastic users themselves get confused, something is wrong.

Q. The K fair is a worldwide reference. Precisely in this edition has hosted 225,000 visitors from 168 countries, how are the regulations beyond the European Union?
A. In many countries, legislation is very restrictive. In Ecuador, Peru, and Mexico, they have already banned single used, as well as in India. The majority of visitors from those countries were looking for alternatives to supply the market.

Q. What have been the nationalities which most sought the startup ADBioplastics?
A. We have been very surprised by the number of Indian visitors who have come to our stand interested in our product, PLA-Premium. Other nationalities that have also visited are those mentioned above for the new regulation, as well as potential German clients because the fair was held in Düsseldorf (Germany).

Q: What was the star product of the fair?
A. Undoubtedly, biodegradable bags, and single-use for the global restriction.

Q. And from ADBioplastics, what have you presented specifically?
A. In our case, we have presented the bioplastic advances with extrusion-thermoforming, injection, and injection blowing for different sectors such as food, cosmetic and pharmaceutical.

Q. To sum up, how was the fair for ADBioplastics as a startup?
A. It has been apotheosis. Our PLA-Premium product, with improved properties, has revolutionized the bioplastics market and everyone wanted to exchange business cards for future business. We have returned with about 700 cards between manufacturers and investors since we are in a round of financing. So, no doubt, we will repeat in the next edition of 2022.

During the 8 days of the fair, this event has hosted 3,300 exhibitors from 63 countries. All have shown the commitment to sustainability and the use of sustainable materials, saving resources and improving recyclability processes.

•  ADBioplastics at the K 2019 trade fair

Iván Navarro, Project Manager, will participate on November 14 in a debate on plastics and in a conference, in which he will address the success story of ADBioplastics, in the development of biodegradable and compostable packaging.

Just two weeks to start Packaging Innovations Madrid 2019 and ADBioplastics will be present for the first time, in its history. He will do it as an exhibitor with a stand located in Hall 5 Stand 3N06. “This is the first time we have attended this fair and we have high expectations. Besides, as manufacturers of bioplastics we will be surrounded by our target, packaging manufacturers, so that they know firsthand how the European regulation of 2030 will affect them and what alternatives to traditional plastic are available to them. Among them, our PLA-Premium ”, Manuel Suárez, CEO of the startup, has said. The fair, which will take place on November 13 and 14 at the IFEMA fairgrounds in Madrid, will be held in parallel with the Empack fair. During these two days, ADBioplastics will present its advances in bioplastics with extrusion-thermoforming, injection, and injection blowing for different sectors such as food, cosmetic and pharmaceutical. "Precisely in the pharmaceutical sector, we have made a prototype of a dosing vessel for an antibiotic that will soon be on the market," has announced Suárez.

Debates and conferences on biodegradable packaging

Sustainability and the circular economy will have a great role in this edition. And is that the packaging is changing, especially in the food sector. That is why Iván Navarro, Project Manager at ADBioplastics has been invited to participate in a debate, which will take place on Thursday, November 14, to address the future of plastics and their challenges. It will be from 1 pm in the Empack Room. Of course, three hours later, at 4 pm, Navarro will give a lecture under the title "Case of success in the development of biodegradable and compostable packaging". There he will address sustainable alternatives in the food industry.

In IFEMA Hall 5, not only new materials will be presented, but also the most innovative packaging solutions that will mark the future. Startup Competition

Every year the 100 most disruptive startups in the world compete for the chance to win. Finalists of past editions have managed to raise about $ 3B and have a 95% survival rate. But not only that. ADBioplastics, a Valencian bioplastic manufacturer, will participate in #ftalks19 the biggest event of the year on food organized by KM Zero, which will be held on September 19 and 20 in Valencia. There, and together with the Heis Global company with which he has developed this sustainable project, they will make know their case of success under the name sweet bottle. It involves the development and manufacture of a bottle made 100% from sugarcane, which is biodegradable and compostable to ensure the planet's sustainability. The official presentation will be made in a round table under the name "Sustainable Packaging for Healthy Foods", which will take place this Thursday, at 7:50 p.m. in Marina de Empresas.

Moderated by the journalist Estefanía Pastor, Companies Section Chief at Valencia Plaza, José Manuel Suárez, CEO of ADBioplastics, and Aniceto Francés, CTO of Heis Global, will participate in this gathering. “We have supplied our known PLA-Premium Bioplastic and specifically the B 5100 grade, through the blown injection technique. We are very satisfied with the final result” has explained Mr. Suárez. The tests have been done at the Heis Global facilities. This company, located in Biar (Alicante), is a biodegradable packaging manufacturer for the pharmaceutical and nutritional industries according to GMPs and within ISO6 cleanroom.

With this case of success, both companies want to highlight the advantages of staking on the circular economy, in the productive processes of companies and more specifically, for the use of bioplastics to make a greener planet. The ADBioplastics product is not only biodegradable but compostable, which means that it breaks downs at 90% in just six months, becoming CO2, water and water, under industrial conditions. It complies with the requirement set by the European Union (European Standard EN-13432 - 2000) and that can help packaging manufacturers fulfill with uropean regulations, which will enter into force in 2021 and 2030, at the same time they take care of the environment.

Ftalks19 is an international event to discuss trends and challenges of the food ecosystem through inspiring talks, experts, foodtech startups pitches, and networking. International speakers will be attending among them Sam Kass, Senior policy advisor for nutrition for Obama Administration, Joseph Puglisi, Scientific Advisor at Beyond Meat or Abby Fammartino of AirbnbFood. Our startup, an ITENE spin-off, started in 2015 and since then, our rise has been meteoric. In 2017 we won the honorable mention "Innovation Award in the Economy of the New Plastic 2017" of the prestigious Ellen MacArthur Foundation and more recently, in 2019 we have been awarded as the best startup in the V Investment Forum at ESIC Business & Marketing School, in Valencia. The ADBioplastics company has won the best startup prize during the V edition of the Investment Forum, organized by ESIC Entrepreneurs in Valencia. «We are very proud that our idea has been awarded. The main goal is to save the planet of the currently plastics tide that we have», José Manuel Suárez, CEO at ADBioplastics, has explained. Funded by ESIC Business and Caixa Popular, the check valued at 3,000 euros has been the prize that has been pocketed by this company, which is currently in search of financing. «We presented our candidacy because we wanted to make our idea known to investors. We are sending samples to potential clients and the feedback is being so positive that we need financing to be able to set up a factory and produce on an industrial scale», Suárez has added.

The ADBioplastics project has fallen in love with the jury. «Our material, made from corn, sugar cane or sugar beet, is biodegradable and compostable. Which means that it becomes CO2, compost, and water in a maximum of 6 months» Suarez has said. La Nave in Madrid has hosted a unique opportunity for startups to meet with corporate and financial investors and ADBioplastics has not wanted to miss the opportunity of attending an initiative like this one.

Under the name «Materials for Health and Food Start-ups Brokerage Event», the technological platform MATERPLAT has organized last Monday, the 17th of June, the first event of these characteristics. Six startups such as Nucaps, Cianoalgae, Silk Biomed, Making Genetics, ATTEN2, and ADBioplastics have offered a pitch. An important moment when an entrepreneur briefly has a chance to market their idea to an investor. Lorena García, Marketing Manager at ADBioplastics, has been responsible to give this pitch. During 10 minutes Ms. García has had the opportunity to explain to the attendees of the advantages of the PLA-Premium to manufacture bioplastics.

After the pitches have taken place an award ceremony and B2B meetings between companies and potential investors like Repsol or members at USA-African and European Business Group, among others.

The main goal of this event has been to offer a space where national start-ups in different phases could present the development products based on materials with application in health and food through pitches to potential investors willing to support these innovative ideas.
